FIACONA Strongly Condemns Brutal Attack on Christian Worshippers in Sukma District, Chhattisgarh
The Federation of Indian American Christian Organizations of North America (FIACONA) expresses deep shock and strong condemnation over the brutal attack on Christian worshippers reported from Sadrapal village, Palem block, under Tongpal police station limits in Sukma on Sunday morning, May 31, 2026.
According to eyewitness reports, a peaceful Sunday worship service was violently disrupted when a group of assailants allegedly armed with sticks and other weapons stormed the gathering site. Men, women, and children were reportedly assaulted indiscriminately, resulting in multiple injuries. Several victims were taken to Sukma Government Hospital for emergency treatment, with some still under medical observation.
FIACONA unequivocally condemns this act of violence against peaceful worshippers and views it as a serious violation of constitutional protections, human dignity, and the fundamental right to freedom of religion.
Alarming Pattern of Increasing Incidents
FIACONA is deeply concerned that this incident reflects a broader and disturbing pattern of rising intimidation, disruption of worship services, and targeted violence against Christian communities in parts of Chhattisgarh in recent months.
Over the past several months, multiple reports from the region have indicated increasing incidents of threats, disruption of prayer gatherings, and attacks on believers during worship services. These repeated occurrences raise serious concerns about the safety of religious minorities and the consistent enforcement of constitutional protections on the ground.
Such developments, if left unaddressed, risk undermining communal harmony and eroding public confidence in the protection of fundamental rights.
FIACONA Calls for Immediate Government Action
FIACONA urgently calls upon the Government of Chhattisgarh and relevant law enforcement authorities to:
- Launch a swift, impartial, and transparent investigation into the attack
- Identify, arrest, and prosecute all perpetrators without delay
- Ensure full medical support, protection, and rehabilitation for the injured victims
- Provide adequate security for vulnerable communities and worship gatherings
- Take immediate preventive measures to stop further attacks and intimidation
Appeal to Civil Society and Faith Leaders
FIACONA also urges national and international human rights organizations, faith leaders, and civil society groups to stand in solidarity with the victims and raise their voices against such recurring incidents of violence.
We call upon all people of goodwill to pray for the victims, their families, and for peace and restoration in the affected region.
Conclusion
The right to freely practice one’s faith is a cornerstone of democratic society and is guaranteed under the Constitution of India. Any attack on peaceful worshippers is an attack on constitutional values and human dignity.
FIACONA remains committed to advocating for justice, religious freedom, and the protection of persecuted communities.
