The Federation of Indian American Christian Organizations of North America (FIACONA) expresses deep concern regarding the proposed amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010 (FCRA) being considered by the Government of India.
For decades, faith-based organizations, including Christian institutions across India, have played a vital role in providing essential humanitarian services such as education, healthcare, disaster relief, and community development—often reaching the most marginalized communities regardless of religion or background. Many of these charitable efforts have been sustained through lawful foreign contributions regulated under the FCRA framework.
The proposed amendments that would allow the government to take control of assets of organizations whose FCRA licenses are cancelled raise serious concerns among civil society groups and faith-based organizations. Such provisions could potentially impact thousands of schools, hospitals, orphanages, and development programs operated by Christian charities and other non-profit organizations serving vulnerable populations.
FIACONA believes that transparency and accountability in financial regulations are important. However, regulatory frameworks must also ensure the protection of legitimate charitable and humanitarian work carried out by non-governmental and faith-based organizations.
As an organization representing Indian American Christians across North America, FIACONA respectfully calls upon the Government of India to:
* Ensure that any amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010 do not unintentionally restrict the ability of legitimate charitable organizations to serve vulnerable communities.
* Protect the independence and operational stability of non-profit and faith-based institutions engaged in humanitarian work.
* Engage in transparent dialogue with civil society organizations, including minority and faith-based groups, before implementing significant regulatory changes.
FIACONA stands in solidarity with all organizations committed to humanitarian service and the protection of democratic values, religious freedom, and civil society participation.
We continue to pray for peace, justice, and the well-being of all people in India.
