Christian School Closed in Rajasthan, India

Often targeted by fanatic groups, a Christian school in Rajasthan, India, had its license revoked last week following allegations of “brainwashing” children and severe operational deficiencies found during inspections.

The St. Paul School in Patela, in the Dungarpur district of Rajasthan, has been the target of right-wing fanatic groups since September 2025, around the same time when the government of Rajasthan was formulating the anti-conversion law.

When fanatic groups, along with parents, protested outside the school late last year, the district educational authorities first ordered the shutdown of the hostel of St. Paul, alleging poor hygiene, “insect-infested” food, and sick children. More than 230 students were affected by this.

Now, finally, the educational authorities have revoked the school’s license. More than 300 children currently attending St. Paul School have been asked to relocate to other schools.

In comments to the media, St. Paul school authorities said they have yet to receive the order and will take the necessary legal action to appeal the revocation.

The Director of Elementary Education’s office has issued an order to revoke. A copy of the order has been sent to the relevant departments and also to the government-controlled National Informatics Center (NIC) with instructions to remove the school’s name from the online portal.

In a statement to the media, the Dungarpur District Education Officer (Primary), Hemant Pandya, said that the Directorate has revoked the school’s recognition for classes 1 through 8 at the end of the 2025-26 academic year.

A media report alleged that a lack of religious harmony had come to the school after some within the school were pushing Christianity onto children. The report alleged that children were being “lured” and “tempted” to pray to Jesus Christ.

The school was served a notice on December 17, 2025, and replied on January 1, 2026, but the report found it unsatisfactory.

According to Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP), a Human Rights movement, an evident and purposeful pattern of inciting violence against Christians was followed from September 2025 onward, immediately after the Rajasthan Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Bill, 2025, was formulated in the state.

Most incidents started with rumors of “forced conversions,” often transmitted via WhatsApp groups or through right-wing local units, targeting schools and hostels run by Christians.

These allegations served as a pretext for coordinated raids, mob assemblies, and police involvement, all under the rubric of vigilance. Many of the same incidents occurred in other districts as well, such as Alwar, Anupgarh, and Jaipur.
