Join us for this FIACONA Forum led by Advocate Sanbha Rumnong, LLB.
Mr. Sanbha will speak from his thirteen years of experience practicing law before the Supreme Court of India and the High Court of Delhi is. Mr. Rumnong has also appeared in matters before other State High Courts in India and argues on matters concerning Indian Constitutional and Criminal Law.
We will also consider how we can best address these laws from our perspective living primarily in North America.

Rev. Thalia Kehoe Rowden, serves as the Executive Director for the Human Rights Measurement Initiative (HRMI). Rev. Rowden is both a trained attorney and a Baptist clergy person whose organization believes what gets measured gets improved. HRMI argues for better use of data for researchers and advocates to make a case for governments to act justly and investing in sustainable development. In this interactive Forum, she will focus on the current state of India and human rights in relation to increased patterns of religious persecution. Discussion will include options for advocacy by civil society and faith groups for persecuted Christians and other religious minorities using the tools provided by HRMI.

Jesuit Catholic Priest Fr. Cedric Prakash is based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. Fr. Prakash is an internationally respected voice and advocate for human rights, peace, and communal reconciliation. He has served in India and also among refugees in Lebanon and as a visiting scholar at Marquette University, Middlebury College, Eastern Mennonite University, among other universities. Fr. Prakash is a prolific writer and lecturer in Hindi, Gujarati, French and English, and an expert on the application of the Indian Constitution. He will present a clear path to the challenges to pursuing justice addressing religious persecution following India’s recently national elections and address the shifting challenges Christians now face in India. Discussion will include time to name opportunities for advocacy by faith communities and civil society.

Please join us for a FIACONA Forum featuring Dr. Fernand de Varennes, former United Nations Special Rapportuer on Minority Issues. Dr Varennes serves as Extraordinary Professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria, Adjunct Professor at the National University of Ireland-Galway (Ireland), and Cheng Yu Tung Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Hong Kong (China).

We will review India’s human rights record, policies determining treatment of minorities including Christians and other minority groups, projections for the future and appropriate international responses by civil society.

FIACONA board members the Rev. Dr. Evangeline Rajkumar will start us off by situating challenges based on gender, ethnicity, race and identity and Mr. Pieter Frederich, a journalist speciallizing on religious freedom in India, will assist us in fielding questions.
