Webinar Recordings -Challenges Facing Christians in India Today
On July 18th the Golden Jubilee of joining the Society of Jesus Fr. Cedric Prakash, SJ led our FIACONA Forum on “Challenges Facing Christians in India Today.”
Fr. Cedric said in spite of generations of Christian contributions to nation building he discussed the challenges faced by Christians and people of faith globally and locally, and the need to address human rights violations and combat the recent trend of denigrating and dividing the Christian community in India, the draconian Anti-conversion Laws, and the increasing violence targeting Christians in Manipur. He emphasized the importance of faith, pluralism, and democracy, and called for a new commitment by the church building on the significant contributions made by Christians in various fields across India, including education, healthcare, culture, science, agriculture, and civil engagement.
A frequent visitor to Manipur for three years and expressed his shock and disappointment at the violence that erupted in the state, particularly targeting Christians. He criticized the Indian government, specifically the Prime Minister and Home Minister, for not taking adequate steps to control the violence and for their insensitivity towards the suffering people of Manipur.
Fr. Cedric also expressed his concern about the ongoing violence against the Kuki people and other Christians in India, and the lack of political will and action from the government despite the attacks on churches and displacement of tens of thousands of people today and his concern over the continued rise in Hindu nationalism and BJP’s policies, the lack of minority representation, and the use of fear tactics to gain power. He criticized the media’s selective portrayal of terrorism and the judiciary’s questionable judgments, specifically the denial of bail to two individuals accused of conversion. And he ended his presentation with a call to action.
