Christian Village Water Supply Deliberately Poisoned in India

In recent weeks, we have been hearing disturbing reports of Christians being killed for their faith. These stories have forced many of us to pause and reflect. During one such moment, my husband and I found ourselves asking a difficult but important question: Is it harder to die for Christ, or to live for Christ?

What recently happened in the Kondagaon district of Chhattisgarh, India, gives us a painful answer.

In this region, believers were reportedly forced to drink dirty water as a form of intimidation. Images and videos of this incident reveal the cruelty and humiliation inflicted upon them. Yet, as shocking as this was, it was only the beginning.

One woman in particular stands out. She was a cook in a government school—an honest job that was her only source of income. When it was discovered that she was a Christian, she was pressured to renounce her faith. She refused. As a result, she was terminated from her job.

The persecution did not stop there. The village pond, her primary source of water, was deliberately poisoned. Some villagers, moved by compassion, warned her in time, and she avoided using the water. Three days later, a dead animal was thrown into the same pond, making it completely unusable. This woman did not die for her faith. She is being forced to live for it—at tremendous personal cost.

While discussing this situation with the president of the Chhattisgarh Christian Forum, he shared the heavy burden he carries. He has been helping affected families by arranging borewells, so they can access clean water. But the need is overwhelming. One person, one organization, cannot possibly meet it all.

We cannot change the outcome for those who have already gone to be with the Lord. But today, right before our eyes, believers are suffering simply because they follow Christ.

And yet, even in this darkness, there is hope. Many Hindus in these villages are witnessing these acts of injustice. Hearts are being stirred. Seeds are being planted. Scripture reminds us that all things work together for good for those who love God. Even persecution cannot silence the gospel—it only makes it more visible.

The gospel must be preached. And the persecuted must not be forgotten.
