The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) Sunday strongly suggested the extension of paramilitary forces in riot-hit Kandhamal.

Last month, the Centre declared that it would call back the CRPF forces after June-end. But the vice-chairman of NCM, M.P. Pinto, expressed fear that violence might return if the forces were withdrawn.

Pinto called the law and order authorities to get a feel of the situation in Kandhamal. At least till all the victims return to their villages, the forces must be retained, he said.

“It is the government’s duty to ensure that not a single person feels the need to stay in the relief camp,” said Pinto.

During a meeting with Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Pinto assured he would do everything possible to retain the CRPF men.

He made the assurance while the chief minister questioned on the withdrawal of forces even after his appeal to the Centre. The CM has reportedly requested for at least 10 companies of CRPF in Kandhamal.

Pinto further noted that the victims in relief camps were very 'frightened' and still were doubtful of living in peace with their villagers.

During a press meeting, Pinto revealed that government had already sanctioned Rs 25 lakh as compensation for churches and prayer halls damaged during the riot. Such a package he said was first of its kind in the country.

The NCM vice-chairman during his two-day tour visited relief camps at Manadakia, Tiangia and Tikabali. He also visited the Baliguda block and interacted with members from both Hindu and Christian groups. Reconstruction and rehabilitation measures in these affected villages will be taken soon, he said.
